The
Review For Movie The English Teacher
The movie doesn't do enough with its cast or its idea; it's an underachiever that simply doesn't try hard enough.
Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger

A screwball comedy that could have been screwier, "The English Teacher" is as interesting for its cast as its content.
John Anderson-Wall Street Journal

Perversely determined to make you laugh. You're more likely to squirm, though ...
Stephen Holden-New York Times

Like so many small films carrying the Tribeca Films label, this seriocomic farce has its moments, but fails to live up to the promise of a starry cast headed by Julianne Moore.
Lou Lumenick-New York Post

The script eases into a toothless comedy about an alum's unproduced play, an awful-sounding suicide drama championed by Moore's character like the second coming of Odets.
Joshua Rothkopf-Time Out New York

Under Craig Zisk's frisky direction, the entire cast is superb and wrinkle-free. The screenplay, by husband-wife team Dan and Stacy Chariton, is thin as a poker chip but as clever as it is contrived.
Rex Reed-New York Observer

Julianne Moore excels in this amusing comedy about a flawed heroine who loses all sense of perspective but deserves a happy ending anyway.
Betty Jo Tucker-ReelTalk Movie Reviews

Cutesy and cloying.
Roger Moore-Movie Nation

Moore shows physical-comedy chops that are both admirable and quite funny..a small but very funny treat with a cast to die for.
Marshall Fine-Hollywood & Fine

A strained attempt to translate the comic punch of Alexander Payne's brilliant send-up of high-school politics, Election, into the realm of an even more tension-fraught extracurricular activity: drama club.
Ethan Alter-Television Without Pity

Notwithstanding some very bizarre stylistic choices and sometimes erratic character transformations, The English Teacher is a frothy indie dramedy with dedicated performances and plenty of pep.
Simon Brookfield-We Got This Covered

This theatre-centric frolic has a clever, pleasing start, but sadly degenerates into bland formula stuff.
David Noh-Film Journal International

an exercise in overwrought post-modern indie hipster humor cliché
Bill Gibron-Film Racket

Even the sitcom stylings might not matter if the movie were funny, but in spite of the potential for Guffman-esque comedy, The English Teacher boasts few surprises ...
Ben Kenigsberg-AV Club

Someone, somewhere lost their nerve, pruning The English Teacher down to nondescript indie quirk with the occasional blip of enticing insanity.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

A fetching dramady starring Julianne Moore as an enthusiastic and vulnerable middle-aged English teacher who turns a corner in her life and realizes she will never be the same again.
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat-Spirituality and Practice

American
Review For Movie American Mary
If these loose threads and underdeveloped aspects leave American Mary less than fully satisfying, it's still a novel ride that confidently mixes horror, humor and offbeat character fillips.
Dennis Harvey-Variety

Once in a while, a mould-breaking horror movie signals the arrival of a unique talent: doubly so in this case, since this bracingly perverse 'body modification' tale was made by Canadian twins Jen and Sylvia Soska, aka the Twisted Sisters.
Nigel Floyd-Time Out

If you believe in the artistry of horror - and its ability to be bold, provocative, and daring - then this is a movie that demands your immediate attention.
Mike McGranaghan-Aisle Seat

While the film has its problems, there is a lot to like here for die-hard horror fans and body mod enthusiasts.
Stephen Lambrechts-Neon Maniacs

American Mary is surely a psychotic look into the world of body modification, but flatlines all too quickly to engage audiences completely.
Matt Donato-We Got This Covered

American Mary is not a great film, but it's a great deal of fun.
Rob Hunter-Film School Rejects

With a gleefully revolting tone, this Canadian thriller is a strange combination of sleekly beautiful visuals and a grotesque plot involving murder and torture.
Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com

This won't break the Soska sisters out beyond their current nerd following, but they have a twisted spark that makes them worth keeping tabs on in future.
Siobhan Synnot-Scotsman

[A] sleek, cold, emetic body-horror flick ...
Philip French-Observer [UK]

pulls off the trick of getting us simultaneously to root for the sideshow attractions & to shrink from the gatekeepers of supposed decency - while, caught somewhere in between, Mary herself becomes a Frankenstein's monster of self-realisation.
Anton Bitel-Film4

There's a Coney Island freak show feel to the horrors that unfold, and for a putative self-empowerment tract, it often feels gigglishly prurient.
Robbie Collin-Daily Telegraph

The problem with American Mary - aside from some pretty atrocious B-movie acting from the support cast - is that it lacks a compelling third act.
James Mottram-The List

The Soska sisters, rightly dubbed the Twisted Twins, have plenty of ideas alright, but are never very certain how to fulfil them cinematically.
Derek Malcolm-This is London

[A] deliciously dark film dripping with very black humour.
Alex Zane-Sun Online

It's made with gusto, but there's little dramatic interest for non-enthusiasts.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

Enjoyably twisted, stylishly directed horror tale with an engaging, original script and a tremendous central performance from Katharine Isabelle.
Matthew Turner-ViewLondon

There have been some fatuous claims to girl empowerment here...but this is really on a feminist level with The Spice Girls wielding a surgical bone cutter.
Tim Evans-Sky Movies

It's smart, well made, mostly well acted and quirky enough to get a cult following. But you'll need a stronger stomach than mine to enjoy it.
Andy Lea-Daily Star

Katharine Isabelle is phenomenal in one of the most original and politically engaged horrors of recent years, even if the second half isn't a patch on the first.
Matt Glasby-Total Film

More a fusion film than a horror movie, American Mary is an unexpected blend of bod-mod horror, revenge thriller and psycho drama, distinguished by a wonderfully still and riveting performance by Katharine Isabelle as Mary, the emerging surgery student

Midnight's
Review For Movie Midnight's Children
The effort to pack an already overstuffed picaresque epic into a film of more than two hours ends up an indigestible stew.
Peter Keough-Boston Globe

The film is beautifully shot, with vivid production design. But because of the tale's lack of cohesion, it doesn't carry enough emotional heft.
Claudia Puig-USA Today

Faithfully adapted from Salman Rushdie's award-winning 1981 novel, the movie feels both too packed and too slight, overflowing with vivid details but lacking the structure to support their weight.
Barbara VanDenburgh-Arizona Republic

There are enough intermittent passages of power and beauty to get you through the slow spots.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

A pretty but staidly linear epic drained of the novel's larkish, metaphorical sweep, and a collection of multi-generational love stories lacking their originally eccentric, fizzy charm.
Robert Abele-Los Angeles Times

Mehta has given us something as pale as it is panoramic.
John Anderson-Newsday

Rushdie's script is faithful to his source novel to a fault. The lesson is that writers revisiting their work for another medium sometimes can't see the story for the words, to twist the old cliche about the forest and the trees
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

A highly eventful, allegorical portrait of the contentious dual nature of the Indian subcontinent.
Kelly Vance-East Bay Express

Teeming with personality and digestible flights of fancy, only to be crushed by the overall narrative responsibility, unable to juggle faces and places to satisfaction.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

A sprawling, lumbering epic that manages to preserve a substantial amount of the book's content but achieves little of its magic.
Frank Swietek-One Guy's Opinion

Rushdie adeptly trims his sprawling tale down to a still-substantial 2 1/2-hour movie, which only occasionally seems to hurry.
Marc Mohan-Oregonian

Stirring, beautifully filmed and highly personal history of India does right by Salman Rushdie's celebrated novel.
David Noh-Film Journal International

Both dreamy and dramatic, a fascinating view of Indian history seen through the prism of a personal story.
Marshall Fine-Hollywood & Fine

An ambitious film conveying the complicated and violent early history of India and Pakistan through the stories of two boys born on independence day.
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat-Spirituality and Practice

Arthur
Review For Movie Arthur Newman
An offbeat, sometimes self-congratulatory road movie romance.
Richard Roeper-Richard Roeper.com

They embark on one of those maundering, life-lessony odysseys that filmmakers love but audiences rarely do.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

One of those many indies that exist to give actors a chance to go slumming.
Kyle Smith-New York Post

Well-acted but ultimately unmemorable ...
Jen Chaney-Washington Post

The film equivalent of a dysfunctional computer sloppily assembled from discarded parts of other machines.
Stephen Holden-New York Times

The promise it begins with doesn't pay off. And while "Arthur Newman" is not a complete disaster, it does leave you wishing the romance and the ride had been a whole lot smoother.
Betsy Sharkey-Los Angeles Times

Arthur Newman is overwhelmed with arty ambitions and a heavy-handed acting style. Ultimately, all the weight prevents the film from taking off and soaring.
Louis Black-Austin Chronicle

Obviously the theme of "Arthur Newman" is the American dream of starting over, but Johnston's screenplay hits it so obviously that it loses its resonance.
Rob Thomas-Capital Times (Madison, WI)

A strange film about dysfunctional people directed with good pace by Dante Ariola in his feature film debut highlighted by fine performances by Colin Firth and Emily Blunt.
Tony Medley-Tolucan Times

Academy-award winner Colin Firth seems to be doing someone a favor by agreeing to play Walter Avery/Arthur Newman.
Robin Clifford-Reeling Reviews

Ariola can't keep the proceedings moving forward, wallowing in the blue mood for far too long. It makes a decent movie with something to share about the exhaustion of defense mechanisms into a slog that leaves its actors high and dry.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

Firth and Blunt give life (and flawless American accents) to this restrained, and occasionally bland, road trip flick.
Christian Toto-Big Hollywood

Firth's performance alone would have been enough to hail this film by director Dante Ariola. Toss in an equally powerful performance by Blunt, and the film turns to a masterwork of acting.
Rick Bentley-Fresno Bee

Often-somber drama has language, sex, drinking.
S. Jhoanna Robledo-Common Sense Media

This is a decidedly minor effort, directed by Dante Ariola with a bland, generic eye, missing the pathos of interesting drama and the charm of quality romantic cinema.
Robert Levin-amNewYork

A slow, lethargic journey to nowhere, full of pseudo-profound dialogue and generic indie-drama plotting.
Josh Bell-Las Vegas Weekly

If anything, Arthur Newman is a reminder that some lonely people are lonely for a good reason.
Mark Dujsik-Mark Reviews Movies

Without a satisfying finale, Arthur Newman might come across as just an acting exercise. If so, it's still an impressive one.
William Bibbiani-CraveOnline

Unfinished
Review For Movie Unfinished Song (Song for Marion)
Even though we know where the film's going, it still manages to give the tear-ducts a workout.
Trevor Johnston-Time Out

This is one film that's equal parts moving and grating.
Rebecca Barry-Flicks.co.nz

The film's comedic elements are a bit clunky but Song For Marion clicks into gear when it starts pulling at the heart strings.
Matthew Toomey-ABC Radio Brisbane

A modest joy to behold, the film also clicks into the recent high-quality spate of movies aimed at and starring seniors, such as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Quartet, Performance, Amour and Hitchcock. Here's to more.
Jim Schembri-3AW

Director Paul Andrew Williams has until now concentrated on low-budget pics about drugs, crime and blackly comic bloodthirsty horror, but with this superior character piece he also demonstrates an amiable knack for the old-fashioned tear-jerker too.
David 'Mad Dog' Bradley-Rip It Up

Terence Stamp is terrific as the grumpy Arthur, while Vanessa Redgrave embodies the ailing figure of Marion with a gravitas one would expect.
Ed Gibbs-The Sunday Age

The sentiments expressed are sincere and the performances have great veracity so it is a shame that the film itself lacks the juice and pace proffered by its energetic cast
Louise Keller-Urban Cinefile

The interactions between Redgrave and Stamp confirm [Williams] has serious dramatic chops. The swerve towards cuddly redemption porn suggests he's starting to panic a little.
Donald Clarke-Irish Times

A movie that celebrates wilful amateurism over anything good.
Alistair Harkness-Scotsman

Everything that follows is as predictable, dreary and proverbial as the weather in Manchester.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

Parts of the film are cheesy and the whole is undeniably manipulative, but the film is so tender and generous, and its stars so genuinely affecting, that it's easy to forgive the odd bum note.
Jason Best-Movie Talk

Plays like an update of the time-honoured Full Monty formula - public exhibitionism vanquishes English emotional reserve - for a post-Glee world.
Mike McCahill-Daily Telegraph

It's a very British, predictable film with its heart in the right place.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

It patronises the older generation by going, "Tee-hee, look at them trying to be young".
Grant Rollings-Sun Online

It has its saving graces, and the chief of them is the performance by Terence Stamp as Mr Grumpy.
Derek Malcolm-This is London

Writer-director Paul Andrew Williams plucks at our heartstrings with the sensitivity of Mike Tyson singing a love song.
Christopher Tookey-Daily Mail [UK]

Sentimental stuff but when an ailing Redgrave sings True Colours it really does bring a lump to your throat.
Allan Hunter-Daily Express

Grit-meister Paul Andrew Williams switches to the key of C major for a commercial crowdpleaser about a seniors' choir.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

Overacting while peering through goggly specs, Redgrave comes on like a drag-act Mr Magoo.
Nigel Andrews-Financial Times

Too emotionally manipulative, but not without its moments of real tenderness and warmth.
Matthew Thrift-Little White Lies

Song for Marion is imbued with a warmth and sensitivity, and while it may hit those familiar weepie conventions, there's much enjoyment to be had here.
Adam Lowes-HeyUGuys
